Like Old Sturbridge Village Plimoth Plantation, New Hampshire has its own Living History museum and village near Portsmouth, NH. From their website:

Originally named Strawbery Banke by early (1630) British settlers for the wild berries growing there, Strawbery Banke today is unique among outdoor history museums - tracing 375 years of history in one of America's oldest continuously occupied neighborhoods. The 10-acre site, with its authentically restored houses and shops, period gardens, and costumed role players, presents the daily lives of ordinary people who lived here - from Colonial times to World War II, from the mundane to the elegant, from economic boom to war time austerity - in engaging and accessible ways. Strawbery Banke Museum is a capsule of New England seaport life across four centuries.

For those of our patrons who use the OverDrive system with your Nook, Kindle, Kobo, iPod, iPad, or other devices to download e-books and audiobooks, you might be interested in this tale of nonsense:

"Basically, OverDrive can and has created agreements with publishers that allow them to prohibit certain libraries’ ability to license their titles. Except OverDrive never tells libraries this is happening. The only way we’d know is by librarians like Ryan stumbling over inconsistencies in title availability and investigating."

What? Yes, the only digital download site for libraries is doing weird stuff and not telling its customers about it. Yayyy!

Come pick up "Loving Frank" - a semi-fictionalized tale of Mamah ("MAY-muh") Borthwick Cheney's real-life affair with Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 1900s.

An excerpt from the New York Times review:

The “Frank” of Horan’s title is the architect Frank Lloyd Wright; the “Loving” came from a woman who has been all but erased from history’s rolls: Mamah (pronounced MAY-muh) Borthwick Cheney, a learned, lovely woman who scandalized Chicago when she left her husband and two young children to flee to Europe with Wright — who left behind a wife and six children of his own. The two fell in love in 1907, while Wright was building a “prairie house” for Mamah and Edwin Cheney in Oak Park.

Horan prods readers to consider an uncomfortable question: Were Mamah’s feelings unnatural? Edwin Cheney didn’t think so; he granted her a divorce and allowed her access to their children. Wright didn’t think so; he wanted to marry her, but his estranged wife, Catherine, refused to divorce him. Compelling the reader’s sympathy, Horan evokes the image of Mamah, sunk in depression after the birth of her second child, recording a quotation by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in her diary: “It is not sufficient to be a mother: an oyster can be a mother.” Mamah wanted more. “For as long as Mamah could remember,” Horan writes, “she had felt a longing inside for something she could not name.” A few months after the diary entry, that longing acquired a name: Frank Lloyd Wright.

We had a great turnout on Saturday for Storyteller Simon Brooks! More than 30 adults and children attended this year's presentation of not-too-scary stories.

Simon's American Cowboy costume & accent were great, and had the kids laughing and gasping by turns. Silly, scary, water-spillingly exciting!

Save the ILL Vans!

Inter-Library Loans Threatened!

We don't have it, but we can get it for you- er... maybe.
As a tiny library with only 640 square feet and less than 6,000 volumes, we are in constant need of support from other libraries, and that requires the Inter-Library Loan! If you want a book we don't have, we look it up in the state library database, click some buttons & the book magically appears on a Friday at our van stop, which is the Hancock library. (We are too small to get our own stop!) Then Kelly (or a nice volunteer) goes to Hancock, gets the book & brings it back & calls you.

If the proposed state legislature succeeds in “taking the funds from the Inter Library Loan vans and using them to fund other programs” there will be ONE VAN for the ENTIRE STATE of NH, which would effectively end the Inter-Library Loan service. Period. For everyone.

Some facts (via the State Library website & other NH librarians):

More than 800,000 items are transferred annually via the state ILL vans
The ILL program is one of the most widely used services in our libraries.
The vans are funded directly by a Federal grant, and not by state tax revenues.
The average cost to move a book/video/cd, etc. is about 44 cents.
The average cost to purchase that item is about $20.
a typical book would cost around $3.15 to send via USPS

NH State legislature is threatening the demise of this service.
The Davis Library and many other small rural libraries like it are in danger of losing a valuable and in fact necessary service. In addition to individual people being able to request specific books from other libraries, we also rely on the ILL service for the Book Club books, either through the Reads-to-Go bags, the State Library's Book Bag Program, or just asking for piles of books on short notice (which I've done twice in the last 2 months). We would never be able to provide these services by ourselves.

As everyone in a 30-mile radius knows, our DSL was down for a week & a half due to some miscommunication and incompetence on the part of FairPoint. We are not fans. We now have service again, but it appears to be quite a bit slower than our previous set up. We'll see. But hey, we're back up! Yay!

The Old Country Fiddler: Charles Ross Taggart, Traveling Entertainer

7pm Saturday March 5, 2011 - Stoddard Town Hall
The Friends of the Library and the Stoddard Historical Society in association with the NH Council for the Arts once again come together to present a night of down-home New Hampshire entertainment.

Charles Ross Taggart grew up in Topsham, Vermont, going on to perform in various stage shows across the country for over 40 years, starting in 1895, including the famous Red Path Chautauqua circuit. A fiddler, piano player, humorist, singer and ventriloquist, he made at least 25 recordings with the Victor, Edison, and Columbia companies and appeared in a talking movie picture 6 years before Al Jolson starred in "The Jazz Singer." Adam Boyce portrays Mr. Taggart near the end of his career, c. 1936, sharing recollections on his life and career, with some live fiddling and humorous sketches interspersed.

In addition to portraying Charles Ross Taggart, Boyce says he "started playing my mother's Magnus chord organ by age 6; had piano lessons around 11...rediscovered piano later, for accompanying fiddlers (chords); started dancing with the Ed Larkin Contra Dancers in 1991, which lead to my prompting/calling dances and interest in learning the fiddle from Harold Luce; I've composed 100 fiddle tunes; have competed in and have judged at various fiddle contests around New England; I give lectures on the history of contra and square dancing in New England (through the Humanities Council), as well as fiddle contest history."

Weeding for Small Libraries

So I was reading this article on weeding library collections published by the Arizona State Library, and I realized that a bunch of what it says is completely irrelevant to a tiny New England library. Up here in Stoddard we have almost zero need for ESL books, as it suggests in the Dewey Decimal section breakdown, under "Getting Down to Business." (Scroll down 2 pages from that link.)

Another section says of Biographies, "If it has not been read by more than one person in the past three years, consider withdrawing it." Considering some of the books that I've purchased have been read by one or MAYBE two people, in which case I consider it "popular," I don't think this rule should necessarily apply. I'd say if it's wicked old AND nobody's read it, sure.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a vicious culler. Books that are smelly, "weird," old, offensive (someday I'll post about the terrible Juvenile Non-Fiction I've culled) etc., etc., I chuck 'em mercilessly. I make exceptions for "classics" especially in the picture book arena. Ferdinand, Theodore, Madeline, Babar, Eloise & Corduroy are safe! (We might need a new copy of Theodore, but the new art is atrocious.)

The other place I make exceptions are a handful of the insanely popular authors who seem to write 10 books a year. Not all the extremely prolific mystery writers... but enough that our mystery section is groaning. So do I keep everything ever written by James Patterson or Janet Evanovitch at the expense of any of the other sections?

"Young adult fiction should be in paperback almost exclusively, less than five years old and/or popular." Really?? So about those new books all the teenagers are beating down my door for the next book in the series... I should wait a year until it's out in paperback b/c who cares about teenagers? Hm. Not sure I'm down with that.

What about guidelines for libraries that are so small I know all the patrons by name & know what the have & haven't read & what they like & can suggest books for them? How much should I cater to my specific patrons?

New Hampshire Humanities Council speaker Rebecca Rule will present her inimitable Yankee humor at the Stoddard Town Hall Saturday January 22 at 7pm. Her presentation is “That Reminds Me of a Story: Yankee Humor and the New England Storytelling Tradition.”

Good stories never die; they evolve from teller to teller. Ms. Rule will prime the pump of New England storytelling tradition with stories she’s collected at small town gatherings over the past ten years, along with a classic or two. Listeners offer up stories, and, as one humorous, serious, thought-provoking story leads to another, the entertaining New England storytelling tradition is preserved.

Ms. Rule has written several books, including: The Best Revenge: Short Stories; Could Have Been Worse: True Stories, Embellishments, and Outright Lies; and a new book Live Free or Eat Pie: A Storyteller’s Guide to New Hampshire. She writes a book review column for three NH newspapers and hosts the New Hampshire Authors Series on New Hampshire Public Radio.

The Davis Public Library in Stoddard, NH is looking for Library Assistant, starting IMMEDIATELY! This is an ideal job for a HS senior, college student, or anyone else with evenings free in the Keene/Hillsborough area. (We're about half way in between.)

The position is 4 hrs/wk (M & W 5-7pm) Sep-May and 6 hrs/wk (M & W 5-8pm) May-Aug. Possibility of more hours (Sat 10-12/ 10-2) starting in April. Starts at minimum wage. :-/

Must be 18+, responsible, reliable, mature, good with people. Substantial computer literacy strongly preferred (MacOS, Linux and/or Windows).

Duties include: shelving, checking books in & out, helping patrons find books & materials, collection maintenance, straightening & organizing shelves, blogging, data entry, searching, etc.

Access to the internet via the computers in the Davis Public Library and/or our wireless access point is unrestricted, unmonitored, unencrypted and completely unsecured. Use at your own risk. We guarantee no technical support. The DPL makes no guarantees as to the availability of access, and bears no responsibility for the content of the internet. The DPL cannot be responsible for any damage or loss of data that may occur while using the computer or our internet access. This includes but is not limited to: hacking, viruses, identity theft, spyware, malware, crashing, Vogons, loss of data, offensive material, unpleasant photographs, etc.

Multi-generational Community-building!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 2010 Summer Reading program and thanks to everyone (including grownups) who came to the cookout Weds Aug 25! 12 children and 8 adults came by our cookout & ate hotdogs & chips, drank juice & seltzer, stood around talking & meeting each other & hanging out! It was great! If there aren't enough kids in the photos, it's because they were busy running around shooting each other with squirt guns!

For the "Make a Splash" Summer Reading Program, we had 36 kids sign up & so far 15 have come to claim their prizes and gift certificates. If you read this summer, bring your book log to Kelly on a Monday or Wednesday between 3:30 and 5:30 and get a gift certificate to the Toadstool Bookshop in Keene!

2011: "One World, Many Stories"

Next year we'd like to do even more, so please let us know what you'd like to see more of, less of, ideas, events, etc. I'd like to have an event each month related to the summer reading theme, "One World, Many Stories."

If people want to pre-order t-shirts next year, I'll have sign-ups available earlier in the year. There will still be a raffle for various kids sizes & a tote bag! Maybe more!

Need things to do in the woods?? This guy has some great advice illustrated with awesome photos. Not only does he tell you all about the bottles, but he also makes you wanna go out & dig some up!

Ok, all you history buffs and glass collectors, this one's for you! I found this great book (with beautiful black & white photos by the award-winning photographer/author) at the library's own tag sale back in the fall.

Has anyone noticed our Sci-Fi collection is PATHETIC???
I did so I picked up a whole bunch of classic Sci-Fi, including Dune & some of its sequels (by Frank Herbert, not any sequels by his son, which a lot of people have said are pretty good. Opinions, anyone?) but we're still missing Children of Dune, in paperback, in case anyone has it & would like to donate.

I also picked up Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card, the next in the Ender's Game series. I've heard it's really good & I loved Ender's Game, so we'll see. I also got some Ursula Le Guin. Who doesn't love her? She's a genius. I got Always Coming Home, which I started in college & never finished. We'll see how it is. I love most of her dystopian stuff. Post-apocalyptic or otherwise.

I also got some Guy Gavriel Kay, who is a genius at respinning other people's worlds. If you haven't read the Fionavar Tapestry, you must! However, I need The Summer Tree in paperback before I can put the other 2 on the shelves. That's the thing about used book sales. Never know what you'll get.

Also, Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Not the whole set. Just the original.

And, of course, we have to have a copy of Forever by Judy Blume. I think it's been legally required by federal law for all libraries to carry it since it was published in 1975, which is I think how old this edition is. (Oh, nope, 1976.)

So. There's just a tidbit of what we've got new. Bunch o' non-fiction, too, but who is excited about that? (Besides me, of course.)

Also: everyone bailed on Storytime today. Waaah. :(

Mark Kurlansky was great!

Marcia and Kelly went to go see Mark Kurlansky at the Colonial. He was a pretty good speaker & seemed to hint that he knew a whole heck of a lot more about the world than he was letting on!

Some other books of his I'd like to look into (having already read Salt: A World History and half of Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World) are The Food of a Younger Land, The Basque History of the World and especially Nonviolence: 25 Lessons from the History of a Dangerous Idea. He's one of the great big-picture thinkers.

That's it! We're done! I have officially gotten rid of all of the books on tape. I have been purchasing audiobooks on CD for the last couple months (a handful in December and a whole bunch in January) and have gotten some donations as well. I'll be buying some more audiobooks on CD this month, either this week or next week. It's very exciting!

I am currently finishing up Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth" as I drive to and from work. I'm on disk 30 of 32, so I have to decide what to listen to next! I like the way the reader does all the accents: Welsh, low-class, high-class, French, etc. He's good.

Also this month I'll be getting more kids' audiobooks on CD, since we only have a tiny handful at the moment. (We have Castle in the Attic by Elizabeth Winthrop, Skippyjon Jones Lost in Spice by Judy Schachner and maybe 2 others.)

Manchester City Library will be holding a $5.00 Bag Book Sale on Saturday, January 30^th from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM. The Library is located at 405 Pine Street in Manchester. The sale will take place in the Winchell Room.

Welcome to the Davis Public Library. We got books. Loads & loads of books. And magazines. And monkeys. Just kidding about the moneys. Sometimes there are babies. They are cute. Unfortunately you can't check them out.

Today's discussion is not about babies, however. It's about books. We have a bunch of books here. Some of them are really good. Many of them are current bestsellers. Fun books. Interesting books. Books that make you think & cry & wonder what the heck we're doing to the world. Some are just pure mind-candy. Which is totally okay by me. I have a serious weakness for my favorite flavor of mind-candy.

The point is, I am not here to judge. I am here to provide you, the people of Stoddard, with the books you want. If nobody comes in to get them, and nobody reads them, and nobody tells me what they want to read... well, then I'm just going to have to resort to drastic measures.

Welcome back to the real world! Now that we've gotten all that chocolate and peppermint out of our systems, it's time to settle back down...with more books!

Just before we closed for the winter holidays, we got another shipment of books! In this case, they were mostly the ones I'd originally ordered back in November, but had had some sort of shipping issue with Amazon.

I'm going to be using the Toadstool from now on, I think, so that shouldn't happen again, folks! In our big box of fun stuff included:

This is an amazing book that I couldn't put down, even when I was sure something TERRIBLE was about to happen. There's magic, kings, queens, murder, betrayal (lots), princes trapped in a tower, and it's all (mostly) true! I can't wait for the rest of this series, and am thinking we need to get the Tudor series (which I'm assuming picks up either later or at least follows Henry & his family).

I read the first of this series over vacation, and I have to say, it's pretty darned good. Two smart, sassy, powerful & sorta ultraviolent highschool girls that aren't your average badass vampire/vampire-guardian chicks... Plus, of course, tragic romance. What's not to love?

What an idea! Putting the Non-Fiction over in the Non-Fiction section! Yes, folks, not only do we have a re-organized Non-Fiction section, we now have a re-organized Non-Fiction side of the ROOM! The "Biography" section is filled to bursting with exciting, tragic, romantic, astounding stories of real people's lives. I would also like to introduce a new category heading that should be exciting to many of you:

"Real Life Adventures, Especially With Ships."

Yes, I made that up all by myself. This section includes titles such as The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea by Sebastian Junger, A Half Acre of Hell: A Combat Nurse in WWII by Avis D. Schorer [technically a memoir, I suppose], 1776 by David McCullough, and Left for Dead: A Young Man's Search for Justice for the USS Indianapolis by Pete Nelson. See? Now with Extra ships.

I am also thinking of creating other sections such as Unclassifiable Lefty Intellectual Books About Really Interesting Stuff, containing such authors as Lynne Truss, Michael Pollan, Jared Diamond and Richard Dawkins. Probably Douglas Hofstadter, as well.

Storytime at 11! Homeschooler collective?

By request, we've made storytime a little later so that it's easier for you to get out to the library in time.

Storytime is now at 11am on Tuesdays!

I hope that this means I get to see more of you more often! Right how it's 5 minutes of 11 and nobody's been in here YET today.

Speaking of which:
There are a TON of young hip mamas with toddlers & babies here in Stoddard and a quite large number of homeschoolers. Please let me know if you are interested in using the library for meet-ups, hang-outs, study-groups or anything else. I am a big fan of homeschooling and would love to do what I can to support Stoddard's homeschoolers, as well as everyone else!

I know that there is one homeschooling family with kids very interested in American history, especially the Revolutionary War era. Anybody else?

Also, now that there's a space heater (thoughtful donation by a town resident) for the Children's Room, it's not so chilly in there. Hooray!

We'd love to get some of your opinions up here on the blog. If you've read something from the library and you loved it, hated it or just felt kinda "meh" about it, drop us a comment here or send an email to library@stoddardnh.org telling us what's good, what's bad, what's worth checking out. It can be short & sweet or an in-depth analysis. If you'd rather we didn't include your name in the review, just say so!

There's an excellent site that reviews fantasy, speculative fiction, science fiction, and such stories that might be of interest to many of our library patrons called The Green Man Review. I've put a permanent link on the left there under "related links." They have a lot of different reviewers, with a lot of varying opinions. Here's their review of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight.

I'll be ordering books next Monday, after the Friends of the Library tell me which books they're going to choose to buy for us this month. Thanks Friends! As I drove down the hill, I was relieved to discover the library was still standing after a dark and stormy Halloween! Thanks so much to the Friends of the Library and the Trustees who gave out candy to appease the ghosties and ghoulies who appeared on our doorstep! Pictures will be hopefully coming soon. Except, of course, of the vampires. We all know about those.

The Friends of the Library have also generously promised to donate 2 books each month to the library. Do you have any suggestions? Post them here or email them to library@stoddardnh.org by the 12th!

Kelly will also be ordering some new books this month, so get those requests in! One of the new books that will definitely be coming in is Ice by the Keene Sentinel Staff.
